Great Yarmouth Third River Crossing project, phase 1 Case Study

Client: TMO Highways, BAM Farrans Location: Great Yarmouth town centre Live dates: March 2021 - September 2021 Product: BG800 and fence

Project background

Works were planned for a third bridge across the River Yare in Great Yarmouth starting in January 2021, with the scheme spanning two years. It's hoped the bridge will support economic opportunities in the wider borough as well as ease congestion in the town.

The work involved three overnight closures of William Adams Way between Suffolk Road and Beccles Road to facilitate the safe removal of the existing pedestrian overpass.

A pedestrian diversion was required throughout the works, with the finished project seeing the installation of a new pedestrian crossing on William Adams Way.

Installation overview

BG800 temporary barrier was installed along William Adams Way to protect operatives carrying out the road works, with this first phase due to last for around three months.

Following the BG800 barrier install, TMO and BAM Farrans found that pedestrians were still using an old crossing point, even though there were road closure signs visible. Pedestrians were even seen climbing over the barrier to complete their journey more quickly, at the risk of an injury.

Highway Care suggested the use of BG800 Fence to prevent pedestrians from climbing over the barrier. Pedestrians are now following the diversion and not crossing the works, where the old crossing once was.

BG800 Fence works in conjunction with BG800 to provide protection against pedestrian incursions, while keeping the working width of the barrier. BG800 Fence has been tested to 1.5m, in accordance with EN1317 N2 achieving W5 working width.

Client Feedback

Ashley Smith, Project Design Supervisor for TMO Highways

"TMO have a great relationship with Highway Care. On this occasion we required BG800 barrier and a fence to prevent pedestrians from crossing the road at an old crossing point and even climbing over the barrier, despite clear sign posting. We found everything was delivered on time, with customer service being of a very high standard, as always".
