Cutt Mill Lane, Surrey

Client: Arbus Ltd (on behalf Ringway and Surrey County Council)

Location: Cutt Mill Lane, Guildford, Surrey

Solution: Tertu TimberRail T32 (N2 W2) with powder-coated P4 Ermes end terminal on a Smartraft® concrete foundation

Project Overview

Highway Care worked in collaboration with Arbus Ltd, who installed a robust,  environmentally sensitive vehicle restraint solution at a challenging site in Guildford, Surrey.

The project marked a significant milestone as the first installation of the Tertu TimberRail Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) on a Smartraft® foundation.

Challenge

A narrow embankment at the project site made traditional VRS installation methods unsuitable. The Road Restraint Risk Assessment Process (RRRAP) and trial hole investigations confirmed that conventional post-driven systems could not be safely or effectively installed due to ground conditions and limited space.

In addition to structural challenges, the client required:

  • A compliant permanent VRS system meeting required standards (N2 W2 performance)
  • A solution that would blend with the surrounding natural, woodland environment
  • Minimal environmental impact during installation

Solution

Reduced environmental impact and carbon footprint, improved installation efficiency and enhanced safety through a collaborative approach that delivered a tailored system combining:

  • Tertu TimberRail T32 VRS (N2 W2)
  • Powder-coated P4 Ermes end terminal
  • Smartraft® modular concrete foundation

Tertu TimberRail was selected as it offers robust performance combined with a natural aesthetic, seamlessly integrating with the woodland surroundings, while the powder coated P4 Ermes end terminal further enhanced safety and visual appeal.

Smartraft® provided a compliant, stable foundation for installation on narrow and weak embankments where traditional methods were not viable.

Outcome

This solution enabled the successful installation of a complete VRS system in a  constrained environment. It also offered enhanced visual integration with the natural surroundings.

This successful first deployment has strengthened the collaboration between Highway Care, Arbus Ltd and project stakeholders, and demonstrates the effectiveness of combining Tertu TimberRail with Smartraft® - creating a solution for challenging, environmentally sensitive locations.

This approach is now being considered for wider use across future projects.
