Witherenden Bridge

East Sussex
Littlewood Group

(Published: August 2025)

Overview

Highway Care has worked with Littlewood Group, who have installed a Janus P4 crash cushion at Witherenden Bridge in East Sussex. The system was selected as the shorter length allowed for a complete installation at the site, without impeding access for local residents while offering high standards of safety.

Solution

Highway Care were approached by Littlewood Group to supply a P4 compliant crash cushion to offer protection against road-side hazards at a site where a compact solution was required to avoid restricting residential access points.

After working closely with Littlewood to understand their requirements, the proposed solution was to install a Janus P4 system at the site, which was swiftly approved by the client. Janus is an energy absorbing, double-sided and bidirectional crash cushion, made entirely of steel. The Janus system’s shorter length allows for a complete installation without blocking the resident’s access gate while still effectively protecting the bridge structure. Janus is part of Highway Care’s market-leading range of crash cushions from SMA Road Safety.

“Following a rapid response from Highway Care, a quote was promptly reviewed and approved by the client. Highway Care facilitated the delivery of the Janus system, including connecting plates and fixings, to the Battle yard in an exceptionally short timeframe.

This efficient coordination enabled the installation to proceed without delays, ensuring that the project remained on schedule. The works were successfully completed meeting all project requirements while maintaining accessibility and safety.”
